Country State of Mind
03:43
|
|||
play me a love song straight from the heart
about rising together and falling apart
one that’s so pretty you want to cry
one that just gets you every time
play me a sad song by somebody real
someone who knows just how i feel
and puts it in words sweeter than wine
cos i’m in a country state of mind
could be an old tune or it can be new
nothing too clever simple will do
play me a bright song to set my soul free
with beautiful voices in sweet harmony
words that inspire lifting me higher
helping me leave this world behind
a song like a lover a song like a friend
a song you can turn to again and again
a song like a river rolling along
river so deep river so strong
i’ve been a rambler spent all my time
looking for truth in these words of mine
and the closer i get the more i find
i’m in a country state of mind.

Love Yourself
04:04
|
|||
everybody’s telling you how to be
everybody’s selling you a philosophy
they say follow, i have the answer
you are the servant i am the master
(but i say)
love yourself love yourself
be a light unto yourself
love yourself and you will find
everything will be all right
everybody has a path only they can go
everybody has a truth only they can know
so take care now, don’t compare now
be aware now when i say
love yourself…
oh, stop trying oh, start flying…
doesn’t matter who you are there will come a day
when you will find your guiding star and you will know the way
it will be your way not their way
the only sure way to be free
love yourself…

Now Love is Gone
03:39
|
|||
vows have been broken, bridges have been burned
words have been spoken, jewelry returned
notice has been given to whom it may concern
everything is wrong now love is gone
sides have been taken, there’s only black or white
friendships forsaken, caught up in a fight
where all that ever matters is who was wrong or right
but everything is wrong now love is gone
there’s a nightingale singing out of tune
a little boy growing up too soon
a sad old dog howling at the moon
everything is wrong now love is gone
lawyers are instructed, battle lines are drawn
hearings conducted, beauty versus brawn
sacrifices made, a castle for a pawn
everything is wrong now love is gone
there’s a nightingale ...

Heart to Heart
03:39
|
|||
look at you and me, happy as can be now we got this done
up above the clouds so proud standing in the sun
can you feel it now?
so glad we’ve climbed this mountain
it took three times but who’s counting
we knew we’d come through
cos we’re heart to heart …
when you call i will hear you through the wind and rain
if you fall i’ll be near you to lift you up again
oh, oh, from the very start, we’re heart to heart …
and when we are apart oh from time to time
hold me in your heart as i hold you close to mine
when you call i will hear you through the wind and rain
if you fall i’ll be near you to lift you up again
till the journey’s end, lover and a friend
we’re heart to heart.

Holding On
03:46
|
|||
dog on a lead on a cold winter’s day
dragging its master, longing to play
dog on a lead doesn’t understand
wants to go faster, as fast as he can
oooh, we keep on holding on, holding on
dog on a lead don’t it make you feel so sad?
knowing what you need and hearing that it’s bad, bad, bad, bad
dog on a lead is a lot like me
trying to be faithful; inclined to be free.

Good Legs
03:53
|
|||
as i rode out this morning across the countryside
i smelled the earth awakening on the air so crisp and bright
and the frost began to sparkle as the sun began to shine
and god was in his heaven and all the world was mine
i climbed between the fragrant pines and coasted down the hill
leaning into serpentines in the woodland’s sudden chill
the village was a-sleeping as i came rolling in
and the only sound was the wheels going round and the whistle of the wind
give me good legs in the morning and a tail wind coming home
my bicycle my bicycle is the best thing that i own
let other people stand in line in shiny suvs
i would rather be outside and travel where i please
i need no fancy gadgets i need no bright designs
just me & the bike and a trail we like and everything is fine
give me good legs…
when the days are filled with business and i’m cooped up inside
i can’t wait to take a rest and head out for a ride
no meetings to contend with no targets to define
with a cheerio it’s off i go as i leave it all behind
give me good legs...

Here's To The One
04:45
|
|||
i was standing at the window playing my guitar
gazing at the heavens counting all the stars
when suddenly it struck me how few we ever see
compared to all the others there must be
for every Robert Johnson who stepped out of the night
there must have been another who could have shone as bright
playing the blues in worn-out shoes
never got his moment in the light
took his hat and vanished in the night
so here’s to the one that got away
never got to hear you sing or play
left without a word your legacy unheard
no-one even saw you slip away
here’s to the one that got away
for every Jimmy Rodgers who made it through that door
there must have been another too humble or too poor
who could have done it too but never even knew
carried on living like before
unaware there might have been more
so here’s to the one ...
from nature’s great abundance beauty overflows
and the universe is wiser than we can ever know
there’s a season and a time a reason and a rhyme
and even stars come and go
here’s to the one ...

Between The Lines
03:26
|
|||
dog on a lead on a cold winter’s day
dragging its master, longing to play
dog on a lead doesn’t understand
wants to go faster, as fast as he can
oooh, we keep on holding on, holding on
dog on a lead don’t it make you feel so sad?
knowing what you need and hearing that it’s bad, bad, bad, bad
dog on a lead is a lot like me
trying to be faithful; inclined to be free.
you can see it in the village, hear it on the train
tell by the cars parked along the lane
it’s in the air, the early signs are there
when you read between the lines
they’re posting pretty pictures, talking up the town
selling off our soul to the people moving down
who come and go and never say hello
and never read between the lines
second homes, what a transformation
but underneath the poverty and grime
there used to be community, now it’s all just property
the spirits of our ages intertwine
when you read between the lines
you say the town looks busy, you think the place has grown
but come back out of season when there’s no-one home
and i will show you what you find when you read between the lines
second homes, bittersweet temptation
the money’s talking louder all the time
friends sell up and move away, the children can’t afford to stay
it’s a paradise in terminal decline
when you read between the lines.

Open Hands Open Heart
04:20
|
|||
i’m learning not to worry, learning not to plan
starting to be happy as often as i can
a little less control, the mystery unfolds
practising the art: open hands, open heart
i’m paying more attention, starting to perceive
this beautiful dimension in everything i see
and as i let it go the mystery unfolds
practising the art: open hands, open heart
and you don’t have to hurry, you can take your time
and you don’t have to worry, everything will be just fine
the less i think about it the more i seem to know
the less i come to doubt it the more it seems to flow
welcome to the show...
i’m learning to be humble, coming to believe
beginning to be grateful for what i have received
and somewhere in my soul the mystery unfolds
welcome to the art: open hands, open heart.

Money For Music
02:54
|
|||
well i’m a poor musician, play it all night long
and everybody listens when i do my song
but when they pass the hat they all look away...
and i say
everybody wants it
everybody needs it
everybody loves it
everyone believes in it
but money for music? no way!
everybody wants it, no-one wants to pay
and it’s just the way it is
well i thought i might be able to sell my little song
but the man at the record label said ‘those days are gone
now all we can do is give it away’
and i say
everybody wants it...
and as for streaming, it don’t pay a cent
we must be dreaming cos that won’t pay the rent
when you gonna pay the rent?
i’m gonna buy me a stone to put this message on
so everyone will know when i’m dead and gone
‘here lies a man who passed away
(cos) everybody everybody everybody everybody
everybody wants it...
that’s how it is in the world today
everybody wants it, no-one wants to pay.

Some Things
03:12
|
|||
i dreamed of being perfect, feeling i was flawed
longing to be something other than a fraud
but though i kept on trying i never did succeed
and now the only thing i am is me
i dreamed of being famous, a brightly shining star
and everyone would love me and travel from afar
but i was too faint-hearted to really ever try
and that is why i never learned to fly
some things don’t come easy
some things you get for free
some things take a lifetime
some things are not to be
and now my dreams of glory and pleasures i would know
are fading like a story from many moons ago
but when i look behind and see where i have been
to my surprise i would not change a thing …
but if you have a dream may i be so bold
and offer some advice from one who’s getting old?
gather all your courage, give it all you’ve got
then either you’ll succeed or you will not
some things…

Windowpane
04:33
|
|||
rain on my windowpane, must you come again
to make my day sad and grey as rain on my windowpane?
rain on my windowpane seems to know my name
suddenly all i see is rain on my windowpane
she is out there flirting, dancing in the sun
laughing with her friends without a care
leaving me uncertain: when the day is done
will she even want me to be there?
s o l o
now she’s coming over, reaching for my hand
whispering the words i long to hear
telling me she loves me and i’m the only one
and suddenly the sky is crystal clear
and rain on my windowpane disappears again
sunny skies, paradise ... and i am home again.
